中山大学英语语言文学研究历史悠久，教学和科研水平居于国内前列，该专业是1981年11月国内首批具有博士学位和硕士学位授予权的五个外语单位之一，2002年该专业又先后被评为中山大学名牌课程和广东省名牌课程，2003年和2007年连续两次被评为广东省重点学科，2005年以该学科为龙头成功申请了“外国语言学及应用语言学”博士点，2007年该学科又成功申报为国家“英语语言文学”重点学科，2007年还成功申报了以“英语语言文学”学科为主体的“外国语言文学”博士后流动站。2010年设立了“外国语言文学”一级学科点。
中山大学外国语学院“外国语言文学”一级学科点下 设有英语语言文学专业和外国语言学及应用语言学专业两个博士点。其中“功能语言学”的研究在全国处于领先地位。经过多年的建设和积累，本一级学科已形成了 功能语言学与语篇分析、功能语言学与翻译研究、批评语言学等三个具有鲜明特色和优势的研究领域。近年在国内外学术期刊发表论文数百篇，出版专著约40余部，译著80多部。2000年以来，共承担国际国内各类研究课题80多项。
本学科具有丰富的人才培养经验，2002年以来招收博士研究生近100人，在学博士生共发表论文120多篇。
本学科拥有一支结构合理、富有创新的学术队伍，现有教授14人，副教授20多人，其中博士生导师9人，长江学者1人。
The School of Foreign Languages, Sun Yat-sen University has two PhD programs: (1) English Language
and Literature, and (2) Linguistics and Applied Linguistics.
Research areas in these two programs include: Systemic
Functional Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Literature and Poetic Studies,
Translation Studies, Critical Linguistics, and Applied Linguistics.
Since 2002, there have been about 100 candidates who were
admitted into these two programs, more than 70 of whom have
completed their PhD studies. The researchers in these two
programs have published extensively in their own research
areas and are playing an active part in academic activities,
both internationally and domestically.
