Job Description
The Department of Urologic Sciences and the Department of Mechanical Engineering jointly invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position for a collaborative research project aimed to develop microfluidic techniques to isolate circulating tumor cells from the peripheral blood of cancer patients.
The successful candidate will have a PhD, preferably in BioSciences and has a background in cancer biology or molecular biology. Relevant previous experiences include:
• Cell tissue culture
• Immunocytochemistry
• Quantitative PCR
• Fluorescence in situ hybridization
• Flow cytometry
Applicants must be highly motivated, creative, and independent researchers with desire to work in an interdisciplinary environment. Verbal and written communication skills in English are essential.
The ideal candidate should be able to take a leading role in the project and be an active biological counterpart to the existing microfluidics engineering team. This individual will be jointly supervised by Prof. Hongshen Ma from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Prof. Peter Black from the Department of Urologic Science. The successful candidate will be given considerable intellectual freedom and will contribute in the areas of hypothesis formulation, experiment design, supervision of laboratory personnel, and preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals.
Our laboratories are located on the main campus of the University of British Columbia and at the Vancouver Prostate Centre. Competitive salary with benefits is provided through grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of extension. The position is available on September 1, 2012.
