Job Description
The mission of the Palo Alto Institute for Research and Education, Inc. (PAIRE) is to facilitate research and education activities conducted at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The range of research activities is broad and includes special emphasis on biomedical, health services, rehabilitation engineering, mental health and geriatric research endeavors. We also support various educational instruction or other learning experiences of benefit to employees and veterans.
PAIRE, a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), is seeking a Life Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate the contribution of autoimmunity to the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension. The laboratory in which the fellow will be working has developed an experimental model to explore the contribution of the immune system to this frequently fatal pulmonary vascular disease.
The ideal candidate will possess a preference for the animal immunological research experience including in vitro assays and animal husbandry.

Duties:
Conduct experiments investigating the pulmonary hypertension in rodents;
Study effects of eicosanoid biology in the development of inflammatory pulmonary hypertension;
Study in vivo effects of pulmonary hypertension by pulmonary artery catheterization and echocardiography of rats;
Maintenance of cell lines germane to research including hybridomas and endothelial cell lines;
Performance of various molecular biological techniques;
Maintenance of detailed lab notes regarding experiment outcome;
Assistance with general laboratory maintenance, ordering of supplies, and compliance with regulations;
Serving as main contact for experimental work, training of fellows and research assistants;
Preparing of reports and scientific papers for publication from the data acquired.
Requirements:
Preference for animal immunological research experience including in vitro assays and animal husbandry;
Advanced knowledge of scientific research methodology;
Skilled in performing complex biochemical and molecular biology techniques;
Knowledge of safe handling/storage of biohazardous chemicals;
Demonstrated knowledge of computers, math and statistics;
Ability to troubleshoot an experiment as necessary;
Good interpersonal skills to assist and train other research staff;
Skilled in histology techniques.

Postdoctoral Fellows are those who receive a postdoctoral appointment from Stanford University. This appointment affords certain privileges at Stanford University, such as email account and library use. Postdoctoral Fellows are eligible for health benefits through PAIRE but are not eligible for paid leave benefits, pension, or match in the PAIRE Retirement Plan. Postdocs may, however, defer to our 401k Retirement Plan.
